McCloud Post

What is the significance of a "gutter" in a comic?

The space that you see between the comics is what comic "aficionados" have named "THE GUTTER". Even though it doesnt have the best name, the gutter plays a big role when it comes to the construction of a comic. It is "the gutters "magic and mystery that tend to be the heart of every comic. The space between the panels lead the reader to turn two pictures into one single idea.

"Comic panels fracture both time and space, offering a jagged staccato rhythm of unconnected moments." Page 67

Aphorism

"The spectacle presents itself as a vast inaccessible reality that can never be questioned. Its sole message is: "What appears is good; what is good appears." The passive acceptance it demands is already effectively imposed by its monopoly of appearances, its manner of appearing without allowing any reply."

The idea of voting and voting campaigns is what came to my mind when I read this passage. Every represenative has motives or plans that sound good and seem productive. They always make compelling arguments that they are the best for the position at hand. The whole system of voting is all about appearances since thats what catches most peoples attention. When it comes to spectacles they are seen every where when it comes to advertising for campaigns.
